UWinnipeg Mask Request

FAQ on Masks

When should I use a procedure mask?

A procedure mask will serve most people on campus in public areas when worn appropriately, covering the nose to chin without gapping. The mask is satisfactory to meet public health requirements and the University mask mandate. It is a three layer mask with the obverse (outer) and reverse (inner) layer made from non-woven fabric and the inner filtering layer made from melt-blown fabric. All masks meet minimum requirements set by American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM-1)

When should I wear a medical mask?

A medical mask will serve people when worn appropriately, covering the nose to chin without gapping, who are required to be in contact with others in close quarters where physical distancing isn't possible and barriers are not available, especially for periods longer than 20 minutes at a time. The mask is satisfactory to meet public health requirements and the University mask mandate. It is a three layer mask with the obverse (outer) and reverse (inner) layer made from non-woven fabric and the inner filtering layer made from melt-blown fabric. All masks meet medical requirements set by American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM-3)

When should I wear an N-95 Respirator/Mask?

An N-95 mask is designed to protect the wearer, when properly fitted, from known respirable non-oil hazards to a factor of 95% efficiency for particulate and droplets .3 microns and larger. If not fitted properly, the efficiency of the N-95 diminishes. Factors contributing to poor fit of an N-95 include facial hair and beards, facial disfigurements, or improper sizing. N-95s have been recommended during the pandemic, and are increasingly common in the workplace. They may be appropriate for those who have medical concerns and who are meeting with random people from the public.

The Safety Office can supply departments or individuals with a variety of face coverings. Please use this form to request masks and/or test kits.
