Security and Social Media

When it comes to social media apps and services, a good rule to remember is if you didn't pay to use the product, then the content you create, publish and view becomes the product.  These media companies make money by selling the data users create and consume.  So it is important you understand the risks associated to using them and take relevent precautions:

  • Inform yourself - Before installing an app or creating a social media account, take time out to read their Terms of Service agreement.  Also, Apple has an that explains how apps access your data.  Google has pertaining to Android.
  •  Check your privacy settings - Whether it be an app on your cell or online service, periodically check your privacy settings to make sure nothing has changed.  This is especially important when an update is released.
  • Think before you share - The more info you put out on social media, the greater the chance that information could be harvested and used in attacks, such as phishing and identiity theft.
  • Malware protection - Scan your device for viruses and malware periodically.
  • Strong password - Be sure to use unique, strong password on your social media accounts.  Check out our guide on creating a strong password.
  • Multi factor authentication (MFA) - use MFA wherever possible.  Passwords can be compromised, so this added protection ensures hackers don't access your account.

The University does not have a formal social media policy, but individuals who use University-owned smartphones can look over the excellent guides created by Marketing and Communications.
